Housing Adaptation Grant

The Housing Adaptation Grant for Disabled People provides up to €40,000 to help adapt a home for a person with a physical, sensory, mental health, or intellectual disability.

Key Grant Details

  • Maximum amount: €40,000 or up to 100% of the approved cost of the works (whichever is less).

  • Administration: Managed by your local authority (city or county council).

  • Income limit: No grant is paid if the total household income is over €75,000 per year after specific deductions. The grant amount is means-tested on a sliding scale between 30% and 100% based on gross household income. 

  • While the grant does not fund standalone consumer sensory toys or loose equipment, it covers structural and physical modifications to create safe, supportive environments. Eligible works can include: [1, 2]

  • Creating designated sensory spaces or rooms (including room conversions or extensions).

  • Installing specialized light control mechanisms for softer, lower-stimulus environments.

  • Enhancing safety on internal and external doors or modifying physical layouts to regulate sensory input
