We often talk about the effects an environment can have. We have been thinking about planning our family holiday for this year and consider camping for the first time ! We know that few environments are as naturally regulating as the outdoors, so of course I started to research the benefits of choosing this style of holiday when considering specific sensory needs.

It seems camping can indeed be a wonderful holiday option for children with sensory needs as it offers calm, connection, and choice in a way that many traditional holidays cannot.
Nature provides gentle, predictable sensory input. Sounds such as birdsong or rustling leaves are often far less overwhelming than traffic, crowds, or constant background noise. Natural light, fresh air, and open space can help children feel grounded and reduce sensory overload.

Camping also allows families to slow down. There are fewer rigid schedules, which can ease anxiety around transitions and expectations. Children can move at their own pace, take breaks when needed, and retreat to a familiar tent or caravan if they feel overwhelmed.
From a sensory perspective, camping supports regulation through movement and play. Activities like walking on uneven ground, climbing, digging, or swimming provide valuable proprioceptive and vestibular input, supporting emotional regulation and body awareness.
Importantly, camping gives children a sense of control and independence. Being involved in simple tasks such as setting up camp or preparing food can build confidence and reduce stress.
When planned thoughtfully, camping can be an inclusive, calming, and empowering holiday choice - Wish Us Luck !
