Back to school is a big transition.

New classrooms, uniforms, noise, early mornings and busy routines can be a lot for any child, but particularly for children with sensory needs.
The good news is that small changes can make a big difference.
In the weeks around returning to school, try:
Bringing routine back gradually ; earlier bedtimes and predictable mornings can help .

Preparing for what’s coming ; photos of the school, teacher or classroom can make things feel more familiar.
Keeping mornings simple ; less rushing, noise and unnecessary demands where possible.
Packing familiar sensory supports ;headphones, a small fidget or another familiar regulating tool can help.
Planning downtime after school ; some children need movement, others need quiet. Follow their lead.

Recent European guidance places increasing emphasis on wellbeing, supportive school environments and early, individualised support.
Back to school doesn’t have to mean getting everything perfect from day one.
Sometimes a little preparation, patience and the right sensory support is enough to make the transition that bit easier.
