Choosing Flooring for Your Sensory Room

Texture Matters

When designing a sensory room, flooring plays a vital role in comfort, safety, and sensory engagement.

The right surface can support movement, calm a busy nervous system, or provide tactile input; so understanding options helps you make the best choice for your space.

Astro Flooring

Pros: Astro provides a soft, grass-like surface that’s low impact and visually soothing. It’s great for active play zones and can help users feel grounded while providing tactile stimulation. Astro is a cost effective option for sensory flooring.

Cons: It can be hard to clean if spills occur, and isn’t ideal for fine motor activities that need a solid surface.

Padded Foam Flooring

Pros: Exceptionally soft and shock-absorbing, foam floors reduce fall impact and feel comforting underfoot; especially beneficial for users with proprioceptive needs or those who benefit from gentle cushioning.

Cons: Cheaper foam can wear quickly and trap dirt; higher-density options cost more. Foam flooring is a costly option even when choosing a cheaper foam.

Jigsaw/Interlocking Mats (e.g., MMA Gym Mats)

Pros: Durable, easy to install, and simple to clean. These mats provide firm support while still cushioning impacts; ideal for multipurpose sensory rooms with active play. Jigsaw Mats are also a cost effective option.

Cons: A stronger odor initially and a firmer feel than ultra-soft foam.

Wooden Flooring

Pros: Clean, timeless, and easy to maintain. Perfect for balance beams, fine motor tasks, or spaces where equipment needs a stable base.

Cons: Hard underfoot and offers little fall protection without additional cushioning. Expensive option.

Carpet ( for use in homes)..

Pros: Soft, if already in place could add a simple crash pad for impact and reduce addition of costly flooring.

Cons: Can be difficult to keep clean, offers minimal fall protection.

Which Is Best?

Soft padded foam excels in calming, therapeutic spaces.

Jigsaw mats suit active play and adaptability.

Astro adds playful texture, while wood works for task-focused areas.

Often, a layered approach; combining wood with foam zones or turf play areas offers the most supportive, versatile sensory environment.
